Nedra Purnell - Biography

About the Artist

I create contemporary Australian artworks that explore place, memory and belonging through landscape-inspired imagery, collage and texture. Each painting begins with my story and invites you to discover your own within it.

Coming to painting and creating after a vocation in education, I enjoy the journey of continual learning, experimentation and exploration of all things watermedia, texturising and drawing. I love the materials, processes and products. My inspirations come from both observing and experiencing Australian landscapes, flora, fauna, people and places. The colours of Australia have a unique character and light. The flora and fauna represent our land’s individuality.

Our coastlines, mountains, plains and deserts tell ancient stories, shaping qualities of endurance, determination, stoicism and community in those who inhabit them. I tell the stories both grand and small that form part of who we are. I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland which gives fabulous contact with both coast and hinterland in a beautiful part of the world. I also travel by caravan throughout Australia with a focus on connecting with the natural world through slow travel, walking and exploring hidden byways. I share life with my husband Colin and two of the most-loved mini schnauzers in the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Nedra’s art is a reflection of the wonder seen in creation and the deeper truths held through her Christian worldview. She works primarily in mixed media, drawn to its freedom: the way textures, layers and unexpected materials come together to tell stories.

The intricacies of natural patterns, colour combinations, architecture and the activities of people in community all contribute. She also finds inspiration in the digital realm — a single image or colour palette from a scroll can spark a full composition. In this blend of natural and digital, she explores beauty, meaning and a quiet reverence.

The Australian landscape remains her visual language—its coastlines, hinterland, weathered towns and changing light—but her work is increasingly concerned with the quieter questions of memory, perception and character. Through layered surfaces, fragments of collage, transparent glazes, texture and expressive marks, she explores how experience accumulates over time and how ordinary moments quietly shape who we become.

With each piece, she aims to create not just visual interest but a sense of stillness, connection and hope. Whether through bold brushstrokes, layered textures or subtle symbolism, her work invites viewers to slow down and consider both the seen and the unseen. Australian places and people are painted, not to describe them, but to explore what they reveal about us, exploring place, perception and the character of ordinary lives.

Her paintings invite viewers to pause, look beyond the obvious and discover something of their own story within the work. Rather than providing answers, they offer space for reflection, where meaning emerges slowly through colour, texture and atmosphere. Her body of work is expressive and painterly, journeying between realism and abstraction.
